Carol asks…

what areas/ streets to stay away from in Pittsburgh, pa?

my boyfriend got into duquesne law school and we are looking at different apartments for us to move in to if he decides that he wants to go there….

are there any particular apartment complexes…particular streets…particular surrounding nearby towns….to absolutely stay away from..due to a safety problem?

and also if there are any particular areas you all would recommend looking at to live….it would be a huge help

thanks guys

If I was you, I;d live in Squirrel Hill, and take a bus down Forbes to Duquesne. It’s a straight shot, will take little more than a half hour. You get good shops plus restaurants, and buses to town are easy.
Pgh is underrated. It’s a friendly town.

Administrator answers:

Well, the area surrounding Duquesne, the Hill District, is quite dangerous, I wouldn’t recommend living there at all.

If he’s bringing a car or willing to get a bus pass, I would recommend Oakland, the area of the city where the University of Pittsburgh is located. There are a lot of young students around in apartments.

If you’re willing to go even farther out from Downtown, try Squirrel Hill or Shadyside. Duquesne is accessible by both car and bus from those areas.

Good luck finding a place in Pittsburgh!

Betty asks…

Can an apartment complex charge for water if there’s no seperate meter?

Hi, a friend of mine lives in a apartment complex and they get a water bill every month. well they are hardly ever there. there is no separate meters for each of the many apts. no one knows how much everyone uses. when the bill comes in there’s no explanation as to how much she used. just a amount to pay. can they do this is this legal????? shouldn’t the water be included in the rent…..this is in Pittsburgh,Pa HELP
That’s what i said look & read what u signed….Cause i know if it was me i would be bitching to someone. because if i was paying $50 and the person next door is only paying $20 that’s not right at all and there’s no way of telling who’s using the most….or who’s using the least.

Administrator answers:

They need to look at the contract. If it’s in there and they signed it, then yeah they can do whatever they want

James asks…

Apartment with no window access and very crammedliving! What are the pa laws?

I am living in a college high rise housing complex in Pittsburgh. I hate this place but its cheap living. i consider it a prison cell. There are no windows on the one half of the building and the side i live in, there is a room in each suite with a window. There are 3 rooms to a suite, i am the only one in the entire suite. The room with the window is locked up tight. Is there a law saying anything about windows and fire escapes? i looked but no success. Also, 4 people are to be in one suite. There is a tiny, tiny refrigerator, and no cupboard space. Its this a law breaker or not??? This is the most depressing place ever!!! The only redeeming quality about it is that it is cheap and basic utilities are included. Thanks in advance!

Administrator answers:

This is legal. Since it is a high rise the window does not have to open. In case of fire you or the fire department simply break it.

Same goes with the rest, it is legal to have tiny. You moved in, you obviously found it acceptable.

Mark asks…

Can a police send a traffic light ticket through mail?

I was driving through a transition of yellow to red light stop at an intersection to my apartment complex. After I entered my gated apartment complex (you can’t get in without a code), I noticed a police car behind me trying to get in and left the complex’s gate right away. I did not know where they came from. Could they have recorded my plate number and issue me a ticket through the mail? I live in pittsburgh, PA by the way.
The apartment is in a small street. I don’t think there’s a camera at the stop light.

Administrator answers:

YES
