Susan asks…

Where can I find a nice apartment for rent in Rochester, NY?

HELLO. WELL I AM LOOKING FOR A 2 BEDROOM APARTMENT, TOWNHOUSE, OR A COMPLEX THAT ACCEPTS DSS IN THE ROCHESTER, NEW YORK AREA. IF YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT A PLACE PLEASE LET ME KNOW:-)

Administrator answers:

I’m not sure what DSS is but try looking on http://rochester.craigslist.org/ for apartments.

Lizzie asks…

Can you run your air conditioner during the winter months?

I live in an apartment complex. They have the temperature in the apartment way too warm. I can’t breathe when it gets too warm/hot. We do have snow in the winter here (near Rochester, NY) Yeah, I know I could open a window or two. Thanks for your help.

Administrator answers:

Yes, but it could ruin the AC unit.

Donna asks…

Pest Control For Renters in New York State?

Hi, I’ve been told by 2 different landlords of 2 different apartments here in Rochester, NY that landlord-provided pest control is against NY state law. The first apartment was rented from an individual home-owning landlord and now this one, which is from a company-owned complex. I’ve scoured the internet for answers on whether this is true, but everything I keep seeing involves New York City, which is different than Western/Upstate New York. I’ve thoroughly read the NYS Tenant’s Rights Guide from the Attorney General and have found nothing to support this. In fact, any infestation seems to void the warranty of habitability. Does anyone know if either of these landlords are correct?

P.S. To clarify, both dwellings are older and prone to moisture – I live in a clean environment, so that is not the problem! House #1 had spiders, sugar ants and house centipedes. Apartment #2 has carpenter ants and a recent influx of large, black, jumpy spiders.
P.P.S. I should’ve elaborated that I’ve put out baits and also that I have 3 cats. Bug bombs = cat poison.

Administrator answers:

Bombs will not get rid of carpenter ants lol… You need a slow acting non-repellent insecticide that will spread the products throughout the ant colony to achieve 100% elimination. There are no products in stores that can do this. The gel baits by theory could but Carpenter ants do not eat gel bait. I love it when I do estimates for people who spend 80 dollars of over the counter products to get rid of a pest problem, violate the law by using registered pesticides inconsistent with the label, which is a felony only to not solve the problem what so ever. You only kill the ants you see.

Do not buy 4 bombs. The person who posted that is asking you to violate a federal law. Read the label. You can only use so much chemical for so many SQ.

As far as renters paying for pest control,Carpenter ants are classified as wood destroying insects. That would be like you paying to get rid of termites for you landlords building. The landlord should be paying the bill not you.
