Your Questions About Apartments For Cheap In Los Angeles

October 11, 2012

Charles asks…

Is this apartment rental descrimination in Las Vegas?

I’m a 28 year old white male with mild aspergers and mild cerebral pulsy from the Los Angeles,CA area.

Becuase housing here in LA is so expensive I have thought of moving to Las Vegas for cheaper housing. I also have a friend who recently moved to Las Vegas from LA.

Two weeks ago I drove up the Vegas alone from Los Angeles. There is this one apartment building that was built in the year 2000 that I really like.

My friend met me at the apartment complex to tour the complex and start out the paperwork. I gave the apartment manager bank statements,a $35 money order for the application fee and a $300 money order for the move in deposit.

The apartment leasing agent who is a 26 year old woman asked me some very innaproprate questions?

One of the questions was do you think we can meet your parents before you move in?
Can your parents come up to Vegas from LA so we can meet them? Do your parents have or no someone here in Vegas who lives near by in case you need help living?
Another question is can your parents sign the lease to take responsibility?

I feel very very insulted. I wonder if the apartment leasing agent thought that I’m mentally retarded?

She doesn’t have any education higher than a high school diploma.

I have a BA from a four year university.

Currently I’m undemployed.

The apartment is in the Summerline area of Vegas.

Two days after the leasing agent took my deposit she ignored my voicemails as well as phone calls.

Before I toured the apartment and met with her in person she told me that I could get a 2 bedroom for $775 a month with utilities included. On the phone she told me $900 a month if you don’t want to sign a lease.

After meeting with me and speaking to her on the phone yeaterday after she ignored me for a week she lied to me.

Yesterday on the phone she said oh no a 2 bedroom apartment without a lease is $1130 a month unfurnished.

Yesterday she told me on the phone that a two bedroom apartment is $1000
Las Vegas,NV and Los Angeles,CA are 5 hours apart from each other by car.

Administrator answers:

You can file a complaint. These questions are only appropriate if your parents are co-signers for the apartment. If you qualify on your own your parents are none of her business.

Of course if she rents to you then you won’t have a discrimination case, only if she refuses based on those things. If she refuses based on income, credit, job or criminal history this won’t get you very far.

File a complaint with the Fair Housing Commission. I doubt I’d want to move in there after your experience, but that’s up to you. You won’t be treated badly again. Http://www.nfhc.org/

Administrator answers:

This does sound like discrimination.

It sounds like she thinks or assumes that you have mental retardation or that you are unable to take care of yourself and make your own decisions. She may think you have a legal guardian who needs to take care of this on your behalf. People make a lot of ignorant assumptions like this about people with disabilities.

By playing with the price like that and increasing the amount every time you talk to her, it sounds like she is trying to get rid of you, likely due to your disabilities.

I think you have a good reason to report this, as it seems pretty clear that she is discriminating against you for your disabilities.

I think it would also be better for you to find another apartment with another agent. It sounds like this agent will be nothing but trouble and will always be a pain to deal with. I’d find another, more professional and fair agent.

I have Asperger’s syndrome too, along with other disabilities, and I have noticed that most people are very ignorant and prejudiced when it comes to people with disabilities and they make all kinds of wrong and strange assumptions.

Administrator answers:

That is not discrimination. IN this economy, so many people skip on rents that the agent wants to meet your family, so they have a contact if anything goes wrong with your lease. They are only protecting the finnaical interest of the apartment complex.
Discrimination is a refusal to you based on sex, race and or religion.

Sandra asks…

When foreigners buy home in the US, that will help the economy right?

Just watching the news and there are a group of Chinese coming to America to buy homes. They feel its a good time to buy because of the cheap prices. The group will visit San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York and Boston looking for houses and apartments in the $300,000 to $800,000.

New York, Los Angeles and many American cities were not expensive. In Manhattan, $300,000 can buy just a kitchen, but the average price for a house in the US is $300,000. That is two million yuan. Nothing for some Chinese.

Story is online here:

So this should help the economy right? And its perfectly legal too.

Administrator answers:

OH God i was fraid of this..screw the economy they are wanting to take over the US . Mark my word.

Bakersfield employment & rent?

I need to know how good/bad the employment rate is in Bakersfield. Honest from experience. I heard it was real cheap & want to know if it still is. Are looking for jobs difficult, or fairly simple? I come from Los Angeles, & it is a bit expensive here. How much would would a 2 bedroom apartment/house for rent would cost by month?? Please give as much details as possible & is there really nothing to do there? From what I’ve heard. Anything else would be helpful.

Administrator answers:

I wouldn’t say that there’s nothing to do there. There’s always “truck customizing” and complaining about living in Bakersfield.

Paul asks…

Cheap, safe places to live near Los Angeles?

Now I am not looking for a place to live in LA, because i know how expensive it is. I was hoping maybe like 25-30 miles from LA? It doesnt need to be some huge town or anything, Im just looking for a studio apartment for like $600-$750 a month? It can be in orange county or anything. I cant imagine theres no cheap/safe places to live in the Orange county/LA county area. I’m planning on getting an EMS job in one of the two counties. Commuting distance isnt a problem for me because I have a motorcycle, thanks to CA’s lane splitting laws traffic is no problem for sport bikes lol. Thanks
I live in san fransisco area, I lanesplit all the time lol. I am also aware of how much money EMT’s make, I am one. I was hoping to move to the LA area so that when I am done with college I can work for LAPD or Orange county sheriff…
lane splitting is alot safer than just sitting in traffic, I know because last year I was in Vegas waiting in traffic and a car came up right behind me and hit me, almost got me killed except i fell off to the right side, where there was open space, my bike was crushed into the car in front of me, its alot safer to just keep moving through traffic, so dont talk shit unless you know lol. this isnt about riding bikes though

Administrator answers:

Hate to say it, but the “cheap and safe-free zone” extends about 100 miles from downtown LA. Start looking in Riverside.

There are no “small towns” until you get past Riverside. In fact, it’s one solid urban and suburban mass all the way to San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, Lancaster, or Mexico.

$900 is the low-end price for a single/studio apartment in this area. Anything less will be in a less safe area.

No need to get hostile with the guy who is trying to help you out there. I worked with a guy who rode a Harley to work with a full set of leathers and a helmet. Regardless of what you may think, riding a motorcycle is still more dangerous than riding a car, and splitting lanes is still more dangerous than staying in your lane. Lane splitting is not a magic solution: You’ll still have to fight your way to work. You’re a big boy, and it’s your call. But you need to realize that the there is still considerable danger involved, and that the traffic here sucks the life out of you, motorcycle or not.

Daniel asks…

Los Angeles moving question.?

Here’s the thing. I moved to LA 4 years ago. I was living in Alhambra. I was living in an apartment there, but I had to move out because of my personal reasons. My friend, who is from Compton, she told me there’s a cheap house for me to buy. I had second thoughts when I was thinking to move there, I’m not scared, but I don’t see that many white people living there, so I assume that will be an issue there. I need your opinion, should I or should I not move there ? Also, the street where she lives is not a gang territory.

Administrator answers:

So, you’re going to decline your move due to the fact that not many Caucasians reside in the area. Why would that be an issue?

Obviousman – I use city data for my sources. City data claims 0.8% of Compton is White. The first two are right.
