Ruth asks…

Live in the ghetto. Got roughed up. My dog did nothing. I did nothing. Was I right?

I am a really small, slender man. My Dad died and I inherited enough to finally move out of an apartment and BUY (not mortgage, BUY) a house. Free and clear. Small problem. I could only afford a house in high crime neighborhood. It was cheap. I am divorced. I have a small daughter. I need to save for her first car, her sweet sixteen, her college, and her wedding. So I bought the house because now THAT expense is over and done with. But the place ( I live in Los Angeles) is near Echo Park and is pretty high crime. So I got burglar bars, floodlights, an alarm, a fence, and recently, a handgun, and a big dog. I got taken on the dog. I told the pound I wanted the biggest German Shepherd they had. That’s the only “tough” breed Allstate will let me own. Well, the dogcatcher saw me coming. Got me a “Shiloh Shepherd,” which is a HUGE German Shepherd (135 pounds) which is a COMPLETE COWARD. Now I want to stay in shape. So I walk for like an hour and a half, two hours a day (I can’t run due to permanent knee injury). I have my dog, but the dog is worthless for protection, so I carry the handgun (hey, I am WAY too small to fight anyone, particularly a gang member.) So the other day as I was walking, this powerfully build guy, looked like a boxer, was walking his pit bull. The dog was really aggressive. The dog started biting and attacking my dog, which just yelped. So the guy moved in. Instead of helping my dog, he kicked the heck out of the hind quarters of my dog, cursed me, and then pushed ME down, and then stalked off. I had a fully loaded .38 Special in my hoodie. I did nothing. I just made sure I was OK, and then made sure my dog wasn’t walking with a limp. Dog seems to be OK. I figure you use a gun when your life is in danger, not to do something when your pride is hurt. Was I wrong? Or am I just a coward?
I see my daughter every other weekend and Wednesdays. She goes to a Gifted Magnet School where my Ex wife lives. Her school is one of the Best in Los Angeles.
I am a teacher. My ex is a teacher. We played the system. We got my daughter into Vintage Gifted Magnet School. She is getting a fantastic education. I just have a long drive to get her there.
MARTIAL ART? I live in Los Angeles. MS 13, 18th Street Gang, and the Bloods and Crips don’t do the Kung Fu Louie here. You carry a gun or you don’t bother.
MARTIAL ART?

Did I not mention I am really really small and have a chronic knee injury?
There are no gun permits in Los Angeles. The Chief of Police doesn’t issue them, and neither does the Sheriff. There are 500 gun permits in a city of 4 million. Unless you are a city councilman, a judge, or a multi-millionaire, you cannot get a carry permit.
In Los Angeles, if you shoot someone in self defence with a gun you don’t have a carry permit for, the usually practice is to give you probation, if the underlying shooting was justified.

Administrator answers:

If you can sell your house do it. Might be better to rent in a nice neighborhood with good schools so that your daughter can get into college. Many children buy their own car, have a simple 16 th birthday party, get scholarships and work to pay for school, pay for their own wedding. Having a dad who shot someone will do your daughter no good. You can rent a small house with a small yard in a better neighborhood. Maybe you can house share with someone or rent a duplex. Also, try listening to Dave Ramsey. Last suggestion, take a martial art with your daughter.

It’s a done deal. I pay $1250 in property taxes a month. My daughter goes to a gifted magnet school. I am not throwing money away. I have to pay alimony, and child support. I am focusing on saving $100,000 by the time my daughter is 18. I am not focusing on keeping up with the Joneses.
Oops! That’s $1250 in property taxes a year. So I don’t pay rent and I pay very little in taxes. I like it like that.

The dog needs to be walked. They need exercise too. And hey, maybe someone is stupid enough to think my dog is dangerous. It’s big.
Dirty Sanchez: So you would have shot the guy? Yes/No?

Administrator answers:

No you are not a coward, you’re standing your ground even though you sound afraid, as a Marine I have heard about and seen plenty of courage and that is courage.

However if you were to sell and move to a more peaceful area that would be discretionary and remember discretion is the better part of valor.

Don’t listen to a bunch of anti gun bull. If it is a choice between going into the ground and going to court, I am going to court.

If you need a permit in Los Angeles then I would try and get one, at least take some safety classes and learn to use a firearm properly. You might also look into some self-defense training.

One of the most feared things about Americans by would be invaders and those that would oppress us is the armed American citizen. So Liberal socialists have been trying to disarm us for years, hmm.

Get rid of the dog or leave him home, he is just something else to worry about and an unneeded distraction.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

Maria asks…

i plan on going to college out of state?

and im looking into going to west los angeles community college. most people will say “well if your going to go to communty college then just go to one in state” but my main reason for going out of state is because ive always wanted to move to los angeles and it seems like that would be the perfect oppurtunity.
my only problem is that for a california residen, it only costs $20 a unit but for a non-resident it costs $193 a unit.
i plan on movng there and getting an apartment, job, etc.
its much cheaper if i am a resident of that state. if i move there the summer before classes start will i be considered a resident of that state or are there any files or forms i have to fill out to become a citizen?

also just wondering, with room and board, if i have an apartment will i still have to pay that?
and the transportation fee, if i have a car will i still have to pay that?

i’ll be a high school senior next year.

Administrator answers:

Well, I don’t understand why you like Los Angeles. From my opinion, it’s not a good place to receive your higher education. Anyway, I’ll answer your question. If you move the summer before classes, you will still be considered as an out of state non-resident. You have to live in California for at least 1 year. You don’t have to pay your transportation fee nor your room/board if you have your own car and apartment.
I hope that my answer will clarify some of your doubts.
Have a good day.
P.S: I’ll be a high school senior next year too! Class of 2009!

Renting an apartment in CA for 3 months?

I’m going on a three month co-op in los angeles in january 2010. I’ve done a good amount of research but I’m having trouble finding a legit site for finding a roommate/a cheap little place that doesn’t have a 6month minimum for the rent. Do you know of any? Would it be cheaper to just stay in a motel for that length of time (a dirt cheap motel mind you). I’m not looking to spend more than 900 a month on rent. Thanks!

Check out www.corporatehousingbyowner.com; also put a notice on Craigslist in the area you are looking in. Maybe someone you will be working with can be of assistance also.

Administrator answers:

Since you are flying during the summer months, ticket prices will probably start around $1,500 each. Also there are not a lot of flights to CTA. If you were flying into Milan or Rome, ticket prices may be cheaper. I suggest you check out http://www.kayak.com or have a travel agent price you out a ticket.

Carol asks…

how much is the cost of living for 18-19 year old male, going to school in east LA?

so atm, i’m 17 attending high school at san jose. i’m planning to move out and go to los angeles state after.
from what i researched, east LA has a lot of gang related/crime rate, etc higher than other places but i don’t mind because the living price seem to be a lot cheaper if i am not wrong..
i really want to move out after high school but still unsure if i am capable of yet..

i haven’t ever asked my parents for money since 8th grade which is like 3 years already and i’m doing fine. i was able to find jobs on craiglist and i have made around 3 grant total from part time jobs in 3 years of high school.

i’m just trying to prove my point that i can make my own money at a limited amount and i know the that living on my own will need a lot more but please help me out here.

what i have researched, they say there are apartment for 1 bedroom ranging around 400-800 at east LA.
school at LA is 3-4k each year but my financial aids will cover that and actually be giving me an extra 1-2 grant per semester. which is the main reason why i want to go here, because it seem to be the cheapest cost of living around..

so just say i rent apartment for 400, (x12) a year = 4800 and food with etc. im guessing around another grant. so each year i would need around 5800. x 4 years of school, i would need a total of 24,000. i think other than the rent, only gas would be a big financial issue for me.

i have no experience of paying all these or living on my own so fix me if i’m wrong!

so my question is how much do you think i need to have each year if i want to move out alone and go to school at east los angeles? (csula aka los angeles state)
what i’m guessing would be 6-7k, correct me if i’m wrong
because i just want to know how much i need to save up by the end of high school.
i put on financial aid that me and my fam makes 0 income so i also get the max they give so paying for school isn’t really a problem to me. plus i will know to buy books on my own.

also i am vietnamese-american. i am pretty amiable and capable of getting along with any type of people as long as they are willing to but i have never been to east LA whatsoever and as of what i know, majority of the gangs there are mexican gangs. i am not a racist or anything but i do know that gang members are often bias to other race than their own or similarity.

will i have other problems than the financial issues i been talking about? (especially racial enmity)

Administrator answers:
