Lisa asks…

Cheap apartments near minneapolis?

I got a job in minneapolis and need to rent an apartment, but I don’t know where to look. I’m hoping to get a small apartment in a suburb… It doesn’t need to be big or beautiful (I’ll be the only one living there, no kids) but I would like it to be safe and clean. Are any suburbs around there known for this?

Administrator answers:

All neighborhoods have pockets of problem areas unless it is in one of the more affluent ones which is not where you are going to find a cheap apartment. You don’t say exactly where in the metro you will be working so it is hard to guide you. I think the NW side of St. Paul is not bad. It is mixed racially and ethnically and age wise and has a mix of different ages in housing as well, is has pretty easy access to the freeways to go downtown MPLS or 694 to the north side, SW side of Mpls is more traffic and can take too long to be practical. The area also has good bus service. Hope this helps.

John asks…

Do you know any apartments, houses for rent, or houses that are really cheap around culver city?

It is so hard looking for a place. Yesterday we were driving around and found a couple of places but not what we were hoping for. So I was wondering if you can help us out a little. We are looking for a place with two bedrooms. Close enough to attend Culver High school. We also are hoping if that place allows pets including a dog. Thank you so much for helping out!

Administrator answers:

I am not from that area, but what I may suggest is checking the local papers in that area, or call a local Real Estate office in the area, they sometimes have their own rentals available.

Here is also some websites that I have heard are helpful.
www.ForRent.com

Either way, good luck to you!

How much, tuition aside, do you think it would cost a college student to live in Manhattan for two years?

Obviously at a cheap rent apartment, possible roommate.

Administrator answers:

No less than 51K including 1.5k per month rent and 5k per year utilities not counting fuel/travel and food. Add fuel and food its another 11k up to 62K.. Hope you have some way to make some money. Good luck in Manhattan. Factor in a room mate and you could cut the 51k down to 25.5 K but the other money is not going down with a room mate

Joseph asks…

I’m trying to solve an argument: Can people on SSI for mental illness rent apartments?

I’m quite positive that they cant. First of all SSI for mental illness is not socially security income (SSDI) it’s supplemental security income and is (I think) $674 a month.

Here are three things I am quite certain of:

1: Renters demand pay stubs or some other proof of income and require you to make usually at least three times the rent.
2: Landlords are pressured (In the state of Michigan I am sure, my friend works for the DHS) to refer turned down would-be renters to the DHS for subsidized housing and group home options so that the state can be sure that they are in treatment and taking their medications.

My extremely-out-of-his-league friend thinks that his brother in law can just take his SSI check and get a cheap apartment.

Which is it?

Administrator answers:

You are wrong on what they get. 674 is welfare. The mentally disabled get 3600 a month. I have a tenant that is bi-polar, that is what she receives. Over 43k a year. She is pretty happy.

If this friend is getting 674 he is NOT getting disability, just welfare, the same welfare all the bums get.

It will not qualify him for any housing programs, just homeless shelters.
