Your Questions About Cheap Apartments For Rent In New York

Lizzie asks…

HOW MUCH IS NEEDED TO MOVE TO NEW YORK?

I live in Philadelphia, PA and I just graduated college and got an entry level job in advertising. My plan is to move to NYC in the near future and live my dreams. Now realistically how much will it cost to make the move and live there with financial stability?

I plan on putting away $280.00 a week for about 8 months: $8872.00

a studio apartment in whichever borough is cheapest: $1200.00 per month (less preferred)
first and last month’s rent: $2400.00
security deposit: $2400.00
first two month’s rent: $2400.00
moving and furnishing cost: $1000.00
TOTAL: $8200.00

Keep in mind: I will have about $672.00 left over for miscellaneous needs. Also I plan on looking for a job throughout August/September and will not move until I have a secure job and income. Is this a realistic plan?

Administrator answers:

Sure thats a realistic plan, just save your money and look for a decent job in NY. I know in Brooklyn, they have decent apartments for about $1000 a month.

JUILLIARD FEES HELP!?

I’ve been given a place in Juilliard! I’m so excited and geared up for it!

But I just looked at the fees on the website, and its around 50 thousand dollars for a room, tutition and food! (UK=30 thousand pounds roughly)

Is it normally that price? Will I be able to afford it? Will it be cheaper to rent my own apartment in New York and pay for my own food?
Thanks for all your answers guys! After a LOT of thinking I’ve decided to give up my place and attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic art in London… My parents could just afford the fees but if the acting thing doesn’t work then I will have wasted them A LOT of money..

Administrator answers:

Congratulations! Yes, Juilliard is incredibly expensive. You could try applying for grants and scholarships from local philanthropies. New York City is incredibly expensive. You could place an ad in a New York newspaper, but expect to either commute many miles or else be packed with several other people in a tiny room. Sorry. I don’t know how people afford to go there. Good luck!

Betty asks…

Is it a good idea to move out here?

Okay, so here’s the deal. I’ll start briefly from the beginning:

1. I don’t have any scholarships to a $5,000 a year university. I am paying it all with the assistance of loans.
2. I make $10 an hour for 24 hours a week, on average.
3. I buy my gas usually at $55 a tank, and will pay for my insurance in a month.
3. I want to go on both a $300 and $500 trip, one to D.C., one to N.Y.
4. If I go to New York, I will be evicted from my parents’ rent free house because they are afraid I will bring bed bugs back with me.
5. I am leaning towards moving out and going on the trip. Currently, I have $1,116.00 in my bank account.
6. This means I will look for an apartment. The cheapest rent is $615 a month.
7. Should I do this? Should I pay for the trip with a balance of around $500 after that, with the addition to $615 a month with gas payments and a paycheck of around $400 every 2 weeks?
8. This should be obvious, but I want to know if there is any possibility of me moving out.

Administrator answers:

Stop going to the University and live your life. The Univeristy is a money pit unless. Without that you can work and travel and live on your own. Give up school.

What are the laws regarding renting an apartment for vacation in Key West, Florida?

??

I know that in new york it is illegal to rent an apartment for short term or sublet or something??

Anyone know of cheap good places to stay for 2 weeks from june 15th until june 29th in key wesT??

thanks

Administrator answers:

June should be a good time to find something cheaper here in Key West, but remember that Key West is always more expensive than most of the rest of the USA, except maybe Hawaii and Alaska. I would suggest you check the local newspaper – you can subscribe to it at www.keysnews.com – and you will be able to watch the ads for apartments, rooms, etc. There are laws here about renting, but it is more the landlords that have to worry about them than the renters. Many people here advertise their apartments on craigslist – there is a section for the Florida Keys. So look there as well. Start contacting a few of the people who are advertising in one of those places and most likely you will find something that will work for you.

My boyfriend wants to move to California?

This isnt exactly the right place for this question but I cant get answers anywhere else!
My boyfriend wants to move to either California, Jamaica (oh gosh) or New York (even worse) So I’ve been looking at places in California. My eyes are on Santa Clara right now But Im still looking.

I want it to be closer to the coast rather than farther away. Probably in the upper half of california for I dont want it to be too hot. I like cities but nothing too busy. Looking for a place to raise a child that has houses/apartments to rent forcheap‘, I dont want anything like New York. Low crime-rate, and good school systems would be wonderful as well. Also what is the job economy like in northern california? A lot of demand for computer related jobs or psychology? Please let me know about any of the cities/towns you know about (:

Administrator answers:

He can move anywhere he likes, but tell him not to forget what you have shared.

Best towns/cities to live in California?

Administrator answers:

Computer related jobs and Psychology would be located in San Fransisco, San Jose, Oakland. Or atleast that would be the best place to look. There may be some in other towns in the north of Cali. I think that San Fransisco would be best for you. It’s right next to the ocean, has tons of sight seeing, parks and a lot of jobs. If you don’t want to live in the city you could live in a suburb and just commute to work into the city.

Some suburbs you could live in are San Rafael, Mountain View, Napa, Vallejo.
Here’s a link to a map of Northern Cali http://www.aaccessmaps.com/show/map/us/ca/californianorth

If you don’t want to work or live in a big city or because the cities I mentioned are too busy you could try looking at these cities. They probably have some jobs in what you’re good at but not as many.

Santa Rosa (It’s about 20 miles from the coast)
Santa Cruz
Eureka
Cresent City

These towns are great for raising kids and have great school systems. They’re nice quiet “big” “little” towns.. I’d much rather live in the smaller towns I listed than the big city. Ultimately though it’s your opinion. Hope I helped.
