Paul asks…

What is the best neighborhood in New York City for a new college graduate to relocate to?

New college graduate looking for a a studio apt under $1100 per month in a safe neighborhood. Suggestions on where to look and/or neighborhoods to avoid?

Administrator answers:

Most grads live downtown in the village. Artsy folk, alternate lifestyle, philosophical, poets, beer guzzlers and grass smokers. However, the new smart trend is to move to brooklyn where rent is about 60% cheaper and still only a $2.00 subway ride away from manhattan

Lisa asks…

where can i find info on the Roomba?

I am thinking about buying one, but i know it doesnt take too long for our upright vaccuum to become full (lots of dog fur). I live in a one bedroom studio apt with my wife and our two medium sized dogs. Due to the constant temperature changes from Texas heat to apt AC or Texas freeze to apt warmth they are always shedding and i would like to have the thing just vaccuum while i am at work since I really dont have time between school, a 40hr job, and homework to vaccuum. My main concern is that the vaccuum would get full after a few minutes and become useless until emptied. Does anyone know the how much it can hold, how strong is the suction, which model to purchase, and where i can see a demonstration.

Administrator answers:

Sandy asks…

Is it legal to accept money from the next/ future tenant of my rental unit?

I live in an area with a tight rental market and I currently have an incredible studio apt (on the corner of the building with great views). Other people in the building have offered me money to pass my place on to them when I leave (the other units in the building are not great – but mine is 2ce as big). Can I legally do that?

Administrator answers:

Sure. Just make sure you document everything in writing, including what happens if you don’t leave, when you’d have to return their deposit in that case, if you can keep some of it for the “option”. An option is somewhat common in real estate, especially land development. People pay you X dollars for the right to have first crack at purchasing the property, usually with some range of prices agreed upon in advance. This seems similar.

But to be sure, you might want to spend a few minutes with a local real estate attorney.

Carol asks…

How do i get my terracotta tile floor clean of it’s hateful white residue?

I just tiled an entire studio apt in terracotta 6″ squares. My tile guy says he sealed the tile, but I’m beginning to wonder if he sealed after he grouted and so maybe the white residue is from the grout. As much as i clean the floors, they look great when wet then dry with this residue. Help! How might I strip the existing sealer and start over?

Administrator answers:

If the tiles were sealed straight after the tiling was done, there’s your problem, That hateful white grout residue can take weeks to wash out, then they should of been sealed. As for stripping the existing sealer and start over, I can’t see that working well because the sealer gets soaked into the porous terracotta tiles, just as the hateful white residue did. That’s why it can take weeks to get the residue out washing with white vinegar and water, do you have a good lawyer?

Thomas asks…

What are some good areas in san francisco ca to live in?

I’m looking to move to San Francisco in the fall and am trying to find a studio apt. in a really good safe area. I don’t care if it’s in the city or in the suburbs as long as its in a safe neighborhood. Any suggestions?

Administrator answers:

Do you really don’t care of money? The best part of the city is pacific height, a studio for $1500 to $2000, not including parking.

The cheapest studio in SF is $995, but not in safe area.
