Your Questions About Studio Apt

Ken asks…

I recently adopted an abused cat and moved to a very small studio apt – he cries constantly?

He cries constantly for attention and even does it at night when I am sleeping he jumps on me and licks my nose or paws my nose to wake me up to be petted. Do you think there is something wrong with him or that he is just very needy from being abused?

Administrator answers:

Hi Kerry,
Kudos to you for adopting an abused cat! I adopted two abused litter mates about 7 years ago, and it was very challenging, but amazingly rewarding.
Both of the cats behaved very differently from each other, and sometimes differently from day to day. Just be ready for lots of variation.
Feliway is a product that can help put agitated cats at ease. You can get it in a plug-in diffuser. I don’t have experience with it first hand, so I can’t speak to its effectiveness.
Personally, I’ve had success using the Bach Flower Essences with my cats. You can use one called Rescue Remedy. A few drops in the cat’s water bowl are completely harmless and can help to calm the cat.
Objective research tends to argue that neither Feliway nor Flower Essences work, and if you find this to be the case, you might consider adopting another feline friend. I know that my cats were each others’ best friends through thick and thin. When they were too intimidated by humans to seek out my companionship, they always had each other. You might consider adopting an adult cat as a companion if your cat is a kitten, or a kitten if your cat is an adult. I generally find that cats work best in groups of two, and *usually* male cats get along with other cats quite well. Adult cats often serve as caregivers to young cats, so if your cat is a kitten, the adult could help it to feel more safe and secure, if your cat is an adult, having someone to care for might help it to feel less uncomfortable.

Sandy asks…

How do you decorate a 432 sq ft studio apt? I want it to seem as big as possible.?

Administrator answers:

Use light colors. Use glass tables if you can. They give the impression that they aren’t taking up so much space. Don’t use bulky furniture. Keep furnishings to a minimum… Use multi-purpose pieces like sofa beds or hassocks with lids that double as storage space. Don’t put too many things on the walls… It will look like you have less room. Use mirrors to give the impression of a larger space. Keep clutter to a minimum, so don’t collect a lot of junk.

James asks…

I have a Victorian studio-sized apt. Will these go with the room?

I have a poster which is an art mosaic of the Playboy bunny, made up of just about every single cover of the magazine in a small pixel.

Now of course I wouldn’t hang it up without a frame because that wouldn’t work. Can it be used, or would it make it too dorm roomy?

I also have a poster of the Police in their last, if not, final tour, including a city of the one I attended. The colors actually match my room

Would it not look right if I put these in nice frames on my wall?

I already have the place established for decoration.

Will they work, or scrap it?
Ok Erin,

If I may I think part of the reason you’re being so blunt in your response is because i’m a male. Truth be told, you’d be surprised over the compliments I’ve received over how I’ve decorated the place so why don’t you chill out?

Im sorry I cannot conform to this post-college “You need to be perfect” mentality. Like the other poster brilliantly said, in so many words, What happened with maintaining a/your personality?

Administrator answers:

Personally, I think I’m too old to hang posters up for decoration.

But if you like these items, then hang them. There’s nothing worse than walking into a house or apartment and not seeing any personality whatsoever. I think lately people have been so concerned with design and having everything look so perfect that they forget to add a piece of themselves and their taste into the design of a room.

Mark asks…

What makes a studio apt. different from a regular apt?

Administrator answers:

Lack of interior doors and walls, mostly!

In a studio, it’s all just one big space … Well, usually there are walls and doors to the bathroom, but the rest is just open. There are no other interior walls, and no doors.

The bedroom (or sleeping area) is a part of this open, or “common” area, so it is challenging to find ways to give it some privacy without sacrificing the “studio” esthetic. Also, building code specifies that a proper “bedroom” or “sleeping room” MUST have a door, a closet, and an “egress” (which is a technical term for a door or window to outside, large enough for a person to fit through in case of fire, etc.)

A studio does not have a proper “bedroom” … That is the main differentiation between a studio and a regular (one-bedroom, two-bedroom, etc.) apartment.

Sandra asks…

Do you think studio apt. are good starters for a young couple?

No children, no pets. Just 2 people. And if so, what is the minimum square footage that is “acceptable”. Or is it better to pay a couple more for a 1 bedroom?

Administrator answers:

Better by far to get a 1 BR.
A studio is really limited space, like being in a slightly bigger dorm room, all in one.
