Ruth asks…

I feel uncomfortable and unhappy living in my parents house at age 29. What should I do?I have aspergers syndr?

For many many years and I’m long overdue I have tried and wanted to get out of my parents house. I’m a 29 year old male still stuck living with my parents in their house. When I graduated college at age 23 in 2004 I had planned to move out of my parents house. Unfortunately My BA degree in radio-TV-Film got me nowhere.

Over the past 6 years I have had jobs that pay between $8-$12 per hour. In my area renting a room in an apartment or another persons house goes for $750 or more per month. A studio apartment goes for $1000 or more a month. With the type of jobs I have had in the past there is no way I mean no way I can afford to even live with a roomate for $750 per month.

I’m frusterated to no end!

Currently I live in my parents house in Encino,California.

I’m an only child.

I want to live my life as an independant Adult! Its very childish to still be living at home at age 29. I’m embarrassed and discusted!

My psychologist tells me to move out with roomates. I tell her and other people over and over and over that with the low paying jobs I have had and have I make way too little to live with a roomate even.

Sadly the only want for me to move out of my parents house is to live in my car or move out of the Los Angeles area to Fresno,Bakersfield, Las Vegas or someplace where housing costs are more affordable.

I sadly don’t have any friends I can live with. I’m lost

What should I do?

I grew up in Encino and have lived there since age 3.

I went to California State University Northridge as well.

Since I have Aspergers I have few acquantances. I don’t have any friends.

I feel like a child living in my parents house.

Its 100 times harder for me to get a job that it is for a person without aspergers.

I want a girlfriend but can’t find one who will accept me.

I do have a car of my own.

I have a car of my own that I could pack boxes and pieces of luggage in and move somewhere outside of the Los Angeles area.

But since I don’t have any family elsewhere I could get homesick.

In my area section 8 has a 10 year waiting list. Sucks!

Because I have Aspergers its very very hard for me to get a girlfriend.

Its very very hard for me to get a job.

I tell you from my life-experience (married, on my own, in college at 18, divorced and disabled at 25, now I’m 40, living with my parents, on disability, with a needed nurse) that there are worse things than living with parents! I discovered years ago that self-pity, which you have and I had, is a waste of energy. Won’t accomplish anything except to frustrate you and others. Just be thankful for what you have.

You have made the situation far too hard for yourself than necessary. Who said living with parents is childish?? Stop conforming to what the society want you to be or do and live your life by your own values. You have thought about moving out so much that you have lost the whole plot & your purpose in life. You are taking it for granted that you are living with your parents a least you not lonely & there is someone to rely on when sick or need anything. I personally wouldnt mind living with my parents as long as possible provided that I have job to provide for my own needs. Listen you got it good you just dont realise it because you are so involved in the situation & unable to see the bigger picture. As for having a girlfriend you will find one when the time is right & as they say the minute you stop looking for it you find it.
Cheer up, everything is alright you just need someone to reassure you of that because you cant see it.
Good Luck & there is still time to achieve anything you want just have motivation & patience.

Administrator answers:

I went to Cal-State Northridge and go t a degree in Communication. My first two years I took low paying jobs and got into a Masters’ program as a result of that. What is lacking in your question is a passion for some profession. Your are spinning about your low paying jobs and not thinking about taking them as a means to something better. As a graduate with a Radio TV Film degree you have a set of skills. You know how to interview people, you can meet deadlines. If you can not get a job in that field where could you use those skills? Check out Human Resources, or even public relations jobs with social service organizations.
