Your Questions About Sydney Apartment Hotels

Susan asks…

We would like a nice economy hotel in the heart of Sydney?

We will be visiting Australia mid Dec. 3 nights will be in Sydney. I have been searching but I really don’t know the best places to stay. 2 adults and 2 teenage sons. I would appreciate if you could recommend to our family a place for us to stay.
Many thanks

I recommend the accor chain of hotels. Of course your budget can be different to mine so accor have a range of hotels within different price ranges from luxury 5 star to comfortable 3 star.

Another option great for your family would be serviced apartments, you get so much more room and for much the same price. I like Medina and Quest and are both reasonably priced.

If you are going to be in one place for more than six months, you will be able to lease an apartment. Depending on the city you are in, a one bedroom apartment will cost you anywhere from $300 to $600 a week. If you are going to be there for less than six months, you will not be able to sign a lease and these apartments will not be available to you. You can use holiday apartments but these are much more expensive at $100 to $200 a day.

The cheapest accommodation in cities is either backpacker hostels or budget hotels such as the Formule 1 chain. In the country, country pubs offer basic but cheap accommodation.

Food varies a lot. If you want to eat McDonalds for every meal, you can, but you will find much better food at reasonable prices elsewhere. I don’t know what you have for breakfast but you can get a full breakfast – bacon, eggs, toast, coffee – for between $10 and $15 in various cafes etc. If you do sandwiches for lunch, again you should not spend more than $10 and there are plenty of restaurants and pubs serving good food at dinner time for $20 or less. In the major cities, buy a book called “Cheap Eats” in any bookshop or Newsagent or Google “Cheap eats XXXX” where XXXX is Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or whatever city you want to know about.

If you are going to cook your own food then it will be a lot cheaper than eating out all the time and you should be able to feed yourself well on $20 a day with careful shopping.
