Here, try this site… You can put in any rent range you want and any extras that you need to have in the apartment in any area that you’re looking at. Don’t pay attention that it says Dallas up top. It’ll go to Philly apartments for you. Good luck finding something.

Mark asks…

Where can I find cheap apartments in Westchester County, NY?

Preferably no more than an hour from the city (I work here). Right now, I am paying $1400 per month for a 1 bdrm in the city, but my boyfriend wants us to move to Westchester. I would pay up to $2000. I really want a second bedroom too. Any ideas?
Thanks.

A good place to search on-line where one can find or view apartments and homes for rent etc is on www.craigslist.com

Click on New York City then in the 3rd column from the left click on Apts/Housing in the 2nd row. Then on the next page if you click on ALL APARTMENTS etc you will see WESTCHESTER on the 2nd column from the far right.

My sister used to live in GREENWICH VILLAGE but after she married, she and her husband moved to LONG BEACH and they commuted to work on the train. My other sister and her husband lived in BASKING RIDGE, NJ when her husband worked at his NYC HQs

Good Housing in New York City and most major urban cities is fairly expensive but the best solution from my perspective is to perhaps find a location equal distance from your work as well as your significant other’s work location. Take your time scouting where you wnat to sign a lease etc bec a lease is a legal document and just like a home sales contract, mistakes where you failed to do adequate research etc are rather costly.

I I were in your shoes, I would seriously recommend you both setting aside time and make it a PRIORITY to look like at least 3 months prior to your current lease expiring and you should never commit to anything you can not see firsthand with your own eyes, plus the traveling distance to work as well as access to public transportation and grocery/retail stores might definitely be worth a few extra dollars in saves you timewise etc.

Best of Luck!

Web sites are a good place to find an apartment or house to rent, if you want to go through the entire list to find one in your state and then city.

The best place to look for places to rent is to go to the yellow pages of your telephone book, look under property managers.

These individuals list properties for rent in certain areas, so make sure you select the areas in which you wish to rent.

Call several of the property managers listed there, tell them you want a list of properties that they have for rent. Some will fax, email or mail the list of local places to rent along with the address, number of bedrooms and bath rooms, amenities available, such as washer and dryers or gyms, the monthly rental of the unit. Most will include a rental application. These list will include the monthly rental required, if a lease or month to month agreement will be signed. They will also indicate if they will accept Section 8 vouchers.

They might indicate a web site that you might visit to get their list of places to rent. It does not cost to get a rental list from a reputable property manager.

Some will require you to stop by their office and pick up the list. A lot of them post their list outside so the list are available 24/7 360.

Make sure you don’t fall for the scams and purchase a list as 70%-80% of these list are composed of free list they have compiled. They are not the property managers of any property in most instances.

You might also google Property managers in whatever city or community you want to live in and see what comes up. Again do not pay for this information as it is free from reliable property managers.

I hope this has been of some benefit to you, good luck.

Carol asks…

Where can I get cheap apartments that are still nice and are close to mass transit to NYC?

I do not want to pay the outrageous prices in NYC, yet I still would like a nice apartment that can easily access NYC (via mass transit– not driving). Where should I be looking for apartments that match this criteria? What mass transit opportunities do they have? Are there any websites that list them?

Charles asks…

What is it like living in Albany NY? I love NY but can’t afford the city, are there cheap apartments…?

Is there a lot of things for people in their early 20′s to do?
Also any good suburbs or towns near Albany?

Administrator answers:

First, Albany NY is NOT New York City. Far from it!

Albany is a major city about 150 miles north of New York City. It’s main function is that it is the State Capital – the bureaucratic functions of government are all located there although there are ceremonial offices of NY government in New York city as well.

Albany is also an education center with several major universities (The State University of New York at Albany is there) and the location of a number of major medical centers.

Albany has an active night life and a number of second-tier and third-tier sports teams,. There are a numbe of ‘young people’ who live in Albany – mostly students. Apartments are less expensive than in New York City.

Albany has a crime problem in the down town area that causes many people to choose to live in the suburbs. Albany is actually one of several ciies (along with Schenectady and Troy) that form the Capital District, a large population center (about 750,000 people) spread over several counties in various combinations of urban, suburban, and rural living styles. In the Capital District, the most active city is actually Saratoga Springs (it’s also the smallest and most removed from New York City)

The most convenient access from the Capital District to New York City is via Amtrack. Trains leave Rensselaer Station on a regular basis throughout the day for the 2.5 hour trip. Round trip fare is about $100.
