SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN’S: Does anyone know of any nice Studio apartments in the Southern California area?

I am looking for a studio apartment in Gardena, Torrance, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Inglewood (the decent parts), Long Beach, San Pedro or any area around these parts that you may know of. It’s just me and my 28 pound dog. I don’t want to spend more that $800.00 per month, not even that but I know it’ll be hard if I went any lower. Thanks and I really appreciate any responses!

Administrator answers: is a good website to use.

Susan asks…

Converting a house to Studio apartments, building regs etc…?

I have a 4 bed house and thinking of making 4 self contained apartments in it to rent out. Whats the best way of doing this so I don’t have to get planning permission etc?

I heard that if they are contained units, its not the same as a flat.
This is for ENGLAND, UK home.
I want to give each room a shower and a 2 hob stove top, with sink and running water.

Administrator answers:

The only way to do this without planning permission is to put locks on the bedroom doors and rent them out to lodgers sharing a communal kitchen. They may not be that thrilled about sharing a bathroom and so you might want to add bathrooms.

Edit: what you propose will need planning permission. Also you will need to meet fire regulations.

Donald asks…

Can Studio apartments feel more cozier and centralized than multiple rooms?

Well I sort of like the idea of having everything all together like being able to go grab food without having to leave the room and miss what’s on tv. Much like a hotel room.

Administrator answers:

They can, or many apartments have a joint living room kitchen/living room but still have the bedroom(s) separate which if you’re planning on having guests over is always nice so they can sit on your couch instead of sitting on your bed to watch TV.

Does anyone know of any good studio apartments in Sherman Oaks?

Two friends and myself are looking for a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood that’s less than 1500 a month, or $500 a person per month.

Administrator answers:

Why don’t you guys move to a less exclusive place where you can get a 1br or 2br for that price. Do you have to stay in Sherman Oaks? There are many nice places that are way cheaper that Sherman Oaks.

Types of apartments: Single, bachelor, studio?

What is the difference between a Single, bachelors and a studio apartment?
What is the difference between a Single, bachelors and a studio apartment? How is single different from a 1 bed apartment?

Administrator answers:

Single usually means there’s one bedroom, one bathroom, one kitchen, one living room.

Studio usually means that there’s one large room with a smaller bathroom and maybe a smaller kitchen.

I have no idea what a bachelor’s might be.

The important thing is to find out the square footage of an apartment. That will give you a better idea of its size.

Sandra asks…

Are there any studio apartments that you can actually buy?

Like a condo, where you’d be able to own the room as opposed to renting?

Administrator answers:

No you cannot purchase an individual apartment unit because the property is not deeded that way. A condominium complex has individually deeded units and therefore can be individually purchased.

It is possible to change the deed and rezone the parcel to make it a condo but its lengthy process and its not commonly being done right now because of the terrible housing market.

Space Savers For Small Studio Apartments?

My sister just moved into a small studio apartment and its made much like a hotel room, with a very small closet and she needs somewhere to put her clothes in exchange for a dresser, as the dresser she has would be too big. thanks for your help.

Administrator answers:

I don’t know if your sister can afford it, but Pottery Barn has a great bedframe. It has a platform for the mattress and the base has openings either for drawers (which you can order with the frame) or baskets that pull out. My daughter has a small apartment and I was thinking about it for her. I’ll post the link below for you to look at it. I could only find the daybed, but it also comes in full and queen with more openings in the catalog.

If this is too pricey for her, maybe she can come up with an idea of a platform for her bed (even a sheet of plywood cut to the size of her mattress and box spring and some type of supports on the four corners) and use baskets underneath the bed.
